Bird window strikes studied at JCCC

Hundreds of birds could be spared due to a study looking to reduce the number of bird window strikes at Johnson County Community College.

Krystal Anton launched a year long research study to find the reasons and places where birds were striking the most, after the recycling and waste minimizarion coordinator noticed hundreds of birds dying from striking the reflective windows on campus.

Anton says to date, more than 252 birds and 55 different species have been documented, including seven yellow billed cuckoos.

When the study is complete, the plan is to place decals on reflective windows and glass walkways, where they found the most strikes occurred.
