Costco Halts Sales of Its Popular Half-Sheet Cake Amid COVID

If you’re shopping at Costco, don’t expect to find the half-sheet cakes anytime soon.

In a shocking move, the warehouse retailer announced it paused sales on the large cakes to focus on the production of 10-inch round cakes.

Delish reached out to the company, who confirmed the move writing, "We are currently not selling our 1/2 sheet cakes at any US locations and as of right now, we have no immediate plans to bring them back. We are focusing on our smaller 10" White & 10" Chocolate Cakes that seem to be resonating with our members."

The large cakes are usually ordered for special occasions like birthday parties, graduations, and weddings, but with large events being cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, there’s been a decrease in demand.

The 10-inch round cakes feed 8 to 10 people and are suitable for socially distant gatherings, a Costco spokesperson told FOX.

Costco has been promoting the round cakes on Facebook since May. In the post, they also clarified that "half-sheet cakes are currently not available to order or customize.”

Big achievements deserve a celebration! Share the love with your grad by picking up a round 10” cake at the bakery. Please note: Half-sheet cakes are currently not available to order or customize.

Costco’s half-sheet cakes have become a cult-favorite for shoppers who want an affordable treat to celebrate milestone moments. The cakes retailed for $18.99 and could feed roughly 40+ people.

Customers flooded the comment section to share their disappointment with the decision adding that they buy the cakes, freeze them, and thaw pieces when they’re ready for a sweet treat.

Another customer wrote that Costco needs to bring back the cakes even if it’s just on a pre-order basis.

“The round are not large enough for larger families. We've had 3 birthday we would have bought them for, another coming up soon as well as graduation. Our grocery store cakes are good, but not Costco good,” she shared.

The move isn’t unprecedented as Fox reports that many bakeries across the country have cut down menus to cater to small groups amid the pandemic.

However, there’s hope that Costco will bring the half sheet cakes back eventually just like they did with free samples.

After suspending free samples in March due to COVID, they returned in June with some modifications to keep customers and staff safe.
