Democrat House members KC area support impeachment

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The only Kansas Democrat in Congress announced Tuesday that she will vote to impeach President Donald Trump.

Missouri's 5th District Representative indicates the same intention.

Freshman Rep. Sharice Davids said she supports both articles of impeachment drafted by fellow Democrats over Trump’s effort to get Ukraine to investigate Democratic political rival and former Vice President Joe Biden. The first accuses Trump of abusing his power as president and the second says he obstructed Congress’ investigation of him by ordering administration officials and agencies to defy congressional subpoenas.

“The evidence uncovered by the House impeachment inquiry is overwhelming. And the facts are uncontested,” Davids said in a statement, adding that impeachment is “not what I came to Congress to do.”

Trump narrowly lost Davids’ Kansas City-area district in 2016, but Republicans already have made Davids’ backing of the impeachment inquiry an issue ahead of her 2020 re-election race.

Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver has also signaled his support for immpeachment. The following is a small portion of the statement Cleaver posted on his website.

"I was extremely reluctant to agree to support an impeachment inquiry into the President. It was, and still is, a discomforting decision. But, as is the case in all of life, the most painful thing is ofttimes the most principled thing. After reviewing witness testimony, the call summary, and public statements from the President and his Chief of Staff, I am left with no other choice but to support the articles of impeachment introduced in the House."
