College graduation season is pretty much in the books, but a mental health expert says former students may have a problem adjusting to life outside of school.

Graduates can sometimes find themselves in a damaged mental state as they deal with real life.

"Leaving their support system their group of friends its this sort of big moment of transition and change all of those things can often lead to changes in mood maybe depression," said Dr. Carolyn Pepper staff psychologist at the University of Missouri Kansas City.
Graduates can experience anxiety after graduation, especially when things don't quite go according to plan.

"There's certainly a lot of stress in terms of change and maybe looking for a job," Pepper said. "The financial stress -- maybe having to pay back loans."

Pepper says sometimes feeling like you ought to be happy, despite abrupt changes to your life, can be a source of anxiety.
