First phase of Katy Trail extension in Lee's Summit nears completion

The old Rock Island Rail Line is coming back to life in the Lee's Summit area as workers convert it to a portion of the popular Katy Trail, which stretches across the state of Missouri.

"Six and a half miles are currently under construction," said Matt Davis, project coordinator for Jackson County. "This is basically the south half."

There is still a lot of work to do.

"Thirty of years of inactivity on a railroad line -- nature kind of takes back over," Davis said.

There could be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the first phase within the next couple of months, Davis said.

Work would begin on the northern half of the line soon after the southern half is complete.

The scenic Katy Trail is used by hikers and bicyclists. The completed area is 237.7 miles long, between the cities of Machens and Clinton.
