Former Chiefs head coach and defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham has died after what his family called a short illness. He was 72.

Cunningham was born in Germany and grew up in California. He played football at the University of Oregon.

Cunningham had great success coaching the Chiefs' defense under Marty Schottenheimer, starting in 1995. Those 90s defenses included Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Thomas and Ring of Honor members, defensive end Neil Smith and cornerback Albert Lewis. Cunningham remained in that position until he was named head coach in 1999.

Cunningham went 16-16 over two years before being fired.

He is survived by his wife, children and grandson.
