KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- An off-duty Kansas City police officer says he fired shots at an intruder in his home early Monday.

The officer woke up around 2:30 a.m. after hearing someone inside the home near St. John Avenue and Bales Avenue. The officer reportedly went downstairs and found a man in his kitchen, which prompted him to fire multiple shots at the intruder.

The officer said he does not know if any of his shots struck the man, who ran away.

Detectives closed St. John Avenue during their investigation of the incident.

The incident is being treated as an officer-involved shooting, so the officer is on administrative leave during the investigation.
