A program designed to tackle mental health issues and reduce teen suicides is expanding in the Kansas City area.

The YouBeYou program expands to 13 new schools this year, from Olathe to Lee's Summit to the Turner District in Kansas City, Kansas. The student-led program is formulated to spread a positive message, said Whitney Davison with Jewish Family Services, program sponsor.

"These kids kind of take charge and decide what they want to do, so Blue Springs South made a great video that highlighted different students, different teachers, that all said, 'You be you,'" Davison said. "Different schools have done assemblies; we have posters and stickers that people can hand out and put up."

The goal, ultimately, is to give students a safe space and support to talk about mental health.
