Missouri firefighters prepare for trip to California, in case they're requested

When California's wildfires began to spread out of control, firefighters from across the country, including our region, began packing their equipment for a possible trip west.

There's a big difference in the weather and growth patterns in California than in Missouri. Nonetheless, Ben Webster is closely watching news coverage of the tragedy.

"You're always watching -- you have to pay attention to it, because as a wildland firefighter, we could get thrown into that situation next year, in the same place," said Webster, Wildland Fire Program Supervisor with the Missouri Department of Conservation. "It's an ongoing education."

So far no requests for help from California, but Webster's department is ready if assistance is needed.

"There's always fire burning in California," Webster said. "If this would have happened two months ago, there's a likelihood we could have folks out there."
