MLK Blvd. name change up to KC voters Nov. 5

The Kansas City Council voted Thursday to place a question on the fall election ballot about the name of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The council voted in January to switch the name of The Paseo in honor of the civil rights leader. Kansas City was the only major city in the U.S. that did not have a street named for King. Signs have been replaced along the boulevard.

A citizen's group called Save the Paseo formed shortly after the January vote. They gathered enough signatures to force a public referendum on the issue. The signatures were certified last month.

Save the Paseo leaders say they have no problems with King being honored with a street name, but they believe there are better options than renaming The Paseo, which has historic significance of its own.
