LIBERTY, Mo. -- There was even more bickering in Clay County Monday as Commissioners openly had a war of words over restoring the Sheriff's budget after a judge's appeal.

Commissioners Gene Owen and Luann Ridgeway objected that the meeting called by Presiding Commissioner Jerry Nolte may have broken Missouri's sunshine laws.

Sheriff Paul Vescovo told the commission that without the restored budget, he doesn't have enough money to hold inmates, which could result their transfer or even release.

"Well, I'm going to have to make some hard decisions," Vescovo said. "One of those decisions is, do I go to the judge and say, 'we need to start releasing as many inmates as we can,'."

Commissioners Owen and Ridgeway want to appeal the judge's decision.

"I think this clearly demonstrates what I believe is the contempt Commissioners Owen and Ridgeway have for our courts of law and for law enforcement," Presiding Commissioner Jerry Nolte said.
