A proposal for a new COVID-19 relief package is set to include a second stimulus check and another round of federal unemployment benefits.

Americans are patiently waiting on the status of another direct payment after a summer of stalemates between lawmakers in Washington.

Now, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is setting the wheels in motion on next steps for negotiations with White House officials.

On Sunday, Pelosi said House Democrats are putting together a new plan that will cost about $2.4 trillion, CNBC reports.

The value of the proposal is down about $1 trillion from House Democrats’ HEROES Act proposed in May, but still almost a full trillion above the $1.5 trillion price tag that the White House has specified as its cutoff.

In addition to another direct payment to Americans and additional unemployment benefits, the proposal will include Paycheck Protection Program small business loans and aid for airlines.

The House could vote on the bill as soon as next week. However, its fate in the Senate is undecided, based on the White House’s top specified cost.

Pelosi has rang optimistic about this round of talks and finding middle ground with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

“When I have a conversation with the administration, it is in good faith,” Pelosi told CNN. “I trust Secretary Mnuchin to represent something that can reach a solution, and I believe we can come to an agreement.”

But she added: “However, at some point, the public is going to have to see why $2.2 or now $2.4 trillion dollars is necessary.”

“The president’s denial of the virus and just resistance to doing anything to crush it has made matters worse,” Pelosi continued. “So we may need more money than that. And we will reveal what that is in a short period of time.”
