A male Wyandotte County deputy has died and a  female deputy is in critical condition after a shooting Friday in the prisoner transport area of the county jail.

"When they pulled into the parking lot, and readied to transport these inmates, they were overcome. It is very possible that with their own firearms, they were both shot," said Maj. Kelli Baliff during a news conference at the University of Kansas Health System, where the deputies were taken.

One suspect was shot and is also in surgery at the hospital.

KCK Police are handling the investigation and say they do plan to review the surveillance footage from the cameras around the courthouse.
