February 12, 2018 - 12:40 pm

According to reporting partner KMBC, Syed Ahmed Jamal, the Lawrence, KS resident detained on Jan. 24 by immigration agents, will be deported.

Jamal was granted a temporary stay in his case last week after local lawmakers got involved in his case.

A family friend now says a judge has ruled, and Jamal will be deported to Bangladesh.

Jamal’s friends, family and neighbors have been lobbying local and national leaders to allow him to stay in the U.S. after he was detained two weeks ago while getting kids ready for school.

Jamal, 55, has a Master’s degree and was teaching future nurses and doctors at area colleges until customs arrested him after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said he overstayed his visa.
