With smoke detectors on recall, KCFD offers to install new ones

The Kansas City Fire Department is asking homeowners and renters to check the smoke detectors to see if their devices are affected by a nationwide recall.

Close to 180,000 battery-powered smoke and fire detectors have been recalled because of risk of failure. The recall, on the Consumer Product Safety Commission website, says an issue inside the alarms could cause them not to activate.

"We really recommend all home to at least have one fire alarm, a smoke detector, smoke alarm, at least one on every floor of your home," said Jimmie Walker, Kansas City Fire Deputy Chief.

No incidents have been reported in Kansas City with regard to failed detectors, but the fire department is still advising people to make sure they are in the clear. 

"I advise everybody to check their smoke detector," Walker said. "Cross reference it with the recalled number, and if they the smoke detector, return it per the recall advice. Return it to where they got it."

The recalled detectors are Universal Security Instruments, with 10-year battery-operated ionization smoke and fire alarms. The recall includes model numbers MI3050S and MI3050SB, with date between January of 2015 and July of 2016.

Kansas City Residents can call the KCFD, and they will provide and install smoke detectors, free of charge, Walker said.
