Kansas City, MO - Compared to modern video games, Space Invaders certainly looks and feels sooo old.

The video game was launched on June 19, 1978 and changed how we play video games, helped to launch the golden age of video games and still impacts video gaming to this day.

Space Invaders wasn't the first arcade video game of course - that designation goes to Pong.  But Space Invaders changed it all.

"Pong was Pong," says Adam Roberts, an owner of Tapcade in Kansas City. "But Space Invaders had a lot more skill involved, it wasn't just table tennis, there was a premise behind it."

Space Invaders is credited with introducing the concept of using Lives during game play, as opposed to a timer or a score to reach. It also was the first to keep track of and display a high score.  And it was the first video game to shoot back.

"It truly paved the way for games like Galaga and Mario Brothers. It really changed the video game industry," said Roberts.
