Victims of domestic violence can break their lease in Kansas City under new ordinance

Kansas City, MO - Victims of domestic violence and sex assault will be able to get out of their leases in Kansas City under an ordinance passed by the City Council this afternoon.

Victims of domestic or sexual violence, or stalking, will have to show proof in the form of a court order or documentation from a doctor.

They'll have to provide written notice to landlords.

Landlords will also have to turn over the security deposit, unless there's damage.

The new ordinance goes into effect on August 17th.
