The old Kemper Arena's transformation into a youth sports complex is set for completion in October.

Officials announced a new sponsorship and name change to HyVee Arena in May.

The updated, modern look to the building's exterior is not the only change, said Scott Taylor, Kansas City councilman. The facility now has a middle floor.

"You can have multiple volleyball or basketball courts, or pickleball competitions going on on both floors at the same time," Taylor said.

The basketball court has already been installed and the running track that will be located in the upper section will be the largest track of its kind in the country.

City officials are excited to see how the complex will affect economic activity in the West Bottoms.

"We've had a lot of great small businesses and restaurants pioneer the revitaliation, and I think this will only bring more activity and energy to that movement," Taylor said.

With tournaments and other sporting events, most weekends at HyVee Arena are already booked through 2019.
