Wet summer means overtime hours for MoDOT maintenance crews

Heavy rain this summer has homeowners struggling to keep up with their lawn mowing, and road crews in Missouri are struggling, too.

It has been a challenging year for the people who operate equipment along Missouri's highways.

Crews are trying to stay ahead of the tall grass, brush and weeds along right of ways, said Lynelle Luther, district maintenance enginner with MoDOT.

"It is a big challenge because we also have other work that we have to do," Luther said. "This is the time of year where we maintain our pavement, so we've got a significant number of people who are assigned to chip sealing."

MoDOT crews have logged more than 15,000 hours this summer, about 1,000 hours more than this time last year, Luther said.
